In the narrative of “(Not so) Little India,” the tale unfolds from the roots of Naaz Theatre, a cinematic landmark born in the 1970s, which laid the foundation for the thriving street and community now known as Gerrard India Bazaar in Toronto. Following the theater’s establishment, a flourishing wave of South Asian restaurants and shops emerged, shaping the vibrant cultural landscape. Although the Naaz Theatre is no longer present, the resilience of the community endures.

This documentary intimately explores the street’s evolution, narrated through the experiences of three steadfast store owners. Nestled at the crossroads of Gerrard Street East and Ashdale Avenue, these entrepreneurs not only witnessed the community’s transformation but actively contributed to its resilience. Their stories serve as a lens into the changes, challenges, and enduring unity that have defined life on this historic intersection, portraying the enduring spirit of “(Not so) Little India” from its cinematic beginnings to the present day.
